“Here! You’re gonna need this.” Logan was headed out the door with Skye and Riggs in tow after meeting up at the Highmill Police Department. He stopped just past Zara’s office. Zara shoved a piece of paper into his hand.

Logan scowled, looking at it. The way it was folded he couldn’t see exactly what it was.

Zara lifted her chin. “It’s a search warrant for Char Drake’s home and property. Just came in. I called in a favor.”

As Logan opened the folded sheet of paper, seeing the formal legal language that gave him permission to enter the house, Skye spoke up. “I’m confused. You didn’t have a search warrant the first time you went in the house?”

Logan shook his head. “Nope.”

He saw the muscles on Skye’s face tense. “Why? You didn’t need one?”

Logan folded the piece of paper and stuck it in the front of his tactical vest, tapping on his leg, asking Riggs to come and stand right next to him. “No. We didn’t. It was a well check. Paige and Owen were concerned that Char had been injured or had gotten sick. So we didn’t need one. Extenuating circumstances.”

Skye cocked her head to the side. “And the second time we were there, Gabe was with us, and we were only outside.”

Zara nodded. “Exactly. Now you have official, legal right to enter the house whether anyone is there or not.”

Skye straightened. “Okay, well let’s go.”

Her definitive tone was almost funny in Logan’s mind. She seemed eager, like a Girl Scout earning her first patch. Logan grinned. “You got it.”

All of the on-and-off tension between the two of them seemed to evaporate as Skye and Logan jumped into the SUV he used for work, Riggs riding in the back seat. Logan glanced over at Skye. She looked beautiful, but then again, she always did to him. He wanted to say something to her, but he wasn’t sure what. Saying something like, “You look pretty today,” seemed superficial and ridiculous given the fact they were working a case. It was hard to know what to do. Worse yet, was it worth the risk? He didn’t know where her head was or what she was thinking about their relationship. Did she have the same feelings that he did?

He fought off the urge to grab her hand and stared straight ahead, rubbing his hand absentmindedly on his cargo pants and then grabbing the steering wheel. They would have to talk about their relationship at some point.

When exactly, he wasn’t sure.

After a moment of silence, Skye looked over at him. “So, what are we hoping to find over at Char’s house?”

When Logan glanced at her, he noticed her expression was quizzical, as if she was trying to sort out the goal of their trip before they even got there.

“We need to find additional evidence so we can try to figure out what happened. The blood on the mattress isn’t enough. We need to figure out if Char left willingly or was forced out of her house.
